The Open Classroom teachers and I have discussed various options for next year, and have made the following decisions.
Marlene will continue as our Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher, and Larry will teach 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade next year as he has done in the past.
After considering Anita and Jenelle’s experiences, strengths, and interests, we have decided that Jenelle will teach 3rd and 4th grade, and Anita will teach 5th and 6th grade (this class could become a 4th/5th/6th depending on enrollment numbers).
Anita is looking forward to the opportunity to work with older students. She will connect with our Middle School and Montessori teachers to help create an academic bridge from our elementary to middle school programs. In the education field, this “articulation” involves knowing what the expectations will be in the older grades, avoiding duplication, and preparing students for the next level. Though flexible, Jenelle prefers the 3rd and 4th grade for this year as she has had more experience with these grade levels than with older students.
The Open Classroom teachers and staff have talked quite a bit this spring about increasing opportunities for collaboration between classes. Students should expect interaction in one way or another with all the teachers in the program throughout the year.
As always, please let me know if you have questions, thoughts to share, or concerns.
