Please read the attached letter regarding notification of upcoming standardized tests at Lagunitas. This is adapted from a form letter that we must send out to inform parents and guardians of the standardized tests.
We have three types of standardized tests to administer this year with our 3rd – 8th grade students. We have a physical fitness (PFT) test we give to 5th and 7th grade students (we have done this annually), we have a California Science Test (CST) for 5th and 8th grade students (same as in the past), and we have new tests beginning this year, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This new test, also referred to as the ‘Smarter Balanced’ assessment, was field tested last year at Lagunitas.
The CST tests in science are paper and pencil tests; the CAASPP test in math and language arts are online with a group component called the classroom activity that is not through a computer. The classroom activity prepares students with concepts and vocabulary needed for the online portion of the tests.
The total testing time for the CAASPP tests are 7 hours for 3rd – 5th; and 7.5 hours for 6th – 8th.
The CST science tests are approximately 2 hours for 5th and 8th grade. However, the tests are not timed, so students may take longer to complete than the expected time. Students finishing early will either read quietly or return to class if taking the test in a separate room.
Exemptions or opt-outs must be in writing and must be renewed each year. If you would like to excuse your child from all or part of the tests, please send an email or note to me at email@example.com or drop off at the office.
Please let me know if you have any questions. There is a link to practice tests and more information on the attached letter.
