To Make A Difference screens Dec 11 by Amy Valens | Dec 6, 2021 | Open Classroom | 0 comments Tom Valens was an active co-oper during the years his children were in the Open, not to mention following his wife Amy’s involvement with progressive education since college. Being a documentary filmmaker, he saw an opportunity to share the work being done in this tiny public school with a larger audience. This is the first film he made, in the early to mid 1980’s. It won awards and found a home in many college education departments. Looking at it 35 years later, the themes that the program started with are still the vital core of the school. Tom and Amy are hosting a free screening of the film Saturday Dec 11 at 6pm at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center, open to the general public. This 5 minute snippet from the 40 minute film focuses on parents, and feels like a perfect accompaniment, to Amy Sickler’s piece on cooping!
